State Grid Smart Grid Research Institute Lu Zhengang: Flexible Low Frequency AC Transmission Technology and Future Application Prospects for Offshore Wind Power


The trend of offshore wind power towards deep and distant seas has led to an increase in the proportion of offshore transmission systems to costs. The efficient collection and economic transmission of large-scale offshore wind energy is also one of the key factors in promoting the parity of offshore wind power.

At present, the mainstream offshore wind power transmission technology mainly includes two types: power frequency AC transmission and flexible DC transmission. Flexible low-frequency AC transmission is a new, efficient and economical AC transmission technology that China has pioneered and broken through. It is a beneficial supplement to power frequency AC and DC transmission, which can improve transmission capacity, flexible control, and flexible networking. By collaborating and optimizing the reactive voltage control of AC converters and wind turbines, the utilization rate of submarine cables and system stability can be further improved. China has currently conducted extensive research and demonstration applications on typical schemes and key equipment for sea breeze flexible low-frequency, and the technology is becoming increasingly mature. Facing the demand for large-scale offshore wind power development and transmission in the future, flexible low-frequency can be sent out through multi terminal/cross voltage networking, with higher channel transmission utilization and transmission system reliability, strong overload capacity, low fault rate, and more economical in the range of 50-170km

On June 8-9, the "Facing the Wind and Entering Deep Blue - The Third Offshore Wind Power Innovation and Development Conference" hosted by Polaris Power Grid and Polaris Wind Power Grid was successfully held. Lu Zhengang, Director of the Flexible Transmission Equipment Department of the Power Electronics Research Institute of State Grid Smart Grid, shared at the conference the "Typical Scheme and Reactive Voltage Control Technology of the Flexible Low Frequency AC Transmission System for Offshore Wind Power".
